  • the sponges attached to heads of coral that look like human hearts, only bright yellow in color with royal blue veins and splotches of white?
  • losing yourself by floating like a jellyfish above and through schools of fishies flashing a kaleidoscope of colors as they pass through the sunlight?
  • the fact that just as above the water, sometimes the most compelling and beautiful specimens are the juvenile (but not delinquent) version of a more boring looking creature? (for icthyologists, check out the juvenile rockmover wrasse, oriental sweetlips, black snapper, many spotted sweetlights of the highfin grouper: wowzers all)
  • the girl who went on an afternoon dive today and surprised and delighted herself by going down to fifty feet with very little ear trouble? you try laughing with happiness underwater and see what happens!
  • finding a bigass lobster under a rock and no tongs to grab it?
  • how treasured a find and varied in color and shape slugs are when they’re in the sea (and even have a prettier name: nudibranchs), and on the land they’re just gross and slimey?
  • the diver who thought at the beginning of her second dive that she preferred the previous spot and was heard exclaiming just 14 minutes later: holy f***ing shit, what is that?
  • the snowflake moray eel teenager (about 2 feet long, white body with random spots that were 1/2 inch black rings colored in with the same yellow of his head) that was hanging out wound around the spikes of a flat head of coral waiting for his buddies to come by?
  • the sun near the equator being able to burn your lily-white skin in only ten minutes?
  • the free hot tea in the restaurant that costs $4 if they put it over ice?
  • the divemasters from the balinese village that like to play the guitar, smoke and smile all the time?
  • the crocodile fish that looks like part of the sandscape and is a wicked looking dude?
  • the little gangs of razorfish that hang out completely vertically, looking like long, thin knife blades in a ring? (they even move in a group like that –  living wind chimes kinda, sorta)

  1. Wow, I know 2 Forman/Singer people that wish they were with you on this dive….Sounds so peaceful and beautiful. A slug never sounded so pretty!! And watch that lily skin!!!
