Back to the Big City

Stac and I head out for a brisk walk early in the morning. Up and down hills and through the beautifully manicured estates that she knows as her neighborhood. I finish a bit of work, we shower and then head in on the train into the city. But some power lines are down, so we have to go to Hoboken instead of Penn station, then ride the PATH train into town. We adjust fine, and are riding our train into the city when Stacey “sits bolt upright” and says “I don’t have my white bag”. Well, this bag, which was sitting at her feet on the train in from New Jersey, contained expensive earrings she was delivering to a customer, as well as some small diamonds she was taking to a jeweler. She freaks a bit until she calms enough to call the station in Hoboken and files a report. She (wisely) decides to head back to the station in case the train is still there. I wish her well, then head further on the same train line to our destination: the Harbor apartment at 77th & 3rd. I drop off my stuff, and head down 3rd to the Candle Cafe, one of our favorite vegetarian restaurants. Spring rolls and salad of roasted mushrooms, yellow beans, parsley, millet, black lentils, etc:

I text with Stacey and am amazed to hear her story:

The manager at the train station says nothing else to be done after filing the report. She finds out that the train is actually still in the yard (for service), but they won’t let her walk through. She asks for them to call the police, which happens, who then asks a worker in the yard to walk through the train. He does, and calls to report that he found the back slid under a seat on his second time through. Unbelieveable! They tell her to go and buy a lottery ticket because it’s her lucky day!

I bring her some takeout from the cafe and we walk and talk while she eats. We run a few errands, and grab a bite at a coffee shop before walking up to the Lincoln Center and standing in front of the famous fountain:

The play we are seeing is War Horse (yes, it was a play before it became a movie). It is powerful, dark and one of the most incredibly staged plays I have ever seen (right up there with Les Miserables). The 3 men working the horse puppet seem good at flicking an ear, or swishing the tail, but I can tell you that by the time the play is nearing its end, it’s hard to remember that it’s not a real horse up there. Stacey is relieved by the happy ending and we start to walk back to the apartment. It’s actually a pretty nice night out and we slip into Ray’s for a slice. However, they just don’t have the right veggie combo for Tatey and we continue our walk…about a half a block when we see a frozen yogurt place and decide that that will work just fine. We walk and eat and soon are back at the corner of 3rd and 77th, where sits a really wonderful (and a bit snooty) shoe shop. I tell her that it’s safe to look in the window now (since the store is closed) and we belly up to the bar:

and stand with our noses to the glass pointing out what we like like two little kids in front of a candy store. So sweet. We head further down the block to our place and tuck in for a good night’s sleep.
