Friday. Sleeping in a polo field isn’t all it’s cracked up to be: they kept the bright field lights on all night. They said for security reasons, but all I know is that it made me think of being in Alaska in the summer: no matter what time of night, it was bright as daylight outside. Of course, I had my trusty eye mask and we were all so tired whenever we crawled into our tents that it hardly mattered. It turns out that the first day of music was the hottest of the 3. I hid under my umbrella all day, or at least until about 4:30, when things started to cool off. Anyway, we headed over to the venue around lunchtime and enjoyed 10 hours of cruising from stage to stage to catch our favs or check out new acts. There was a large outdoor stage, a smaller one, and then 3 large tent structures that provided cover from the shade with open sides (these open sides did not, however, prevent the hot, hot human heat nor the smoke from surprisingly pervasive cigarette smoking from making it too stuffy for yours truly to deal with). Except for the rare occasion when I wanted to experience what it was like to be in the crowd and experience that energy, I was usually on the fringe – where I could dance AND breathe! Anyway, one of the 3 covered stages was usually filled with throbbing dance club- DJ personalities that was always thumping.
