Weeding in the garden. Those poor icicle radishes have grown so big that not only is half of its body sticking out of the ground, but some critter has started gnawing on them. That shall not continue! So, I picked all the big ones, including one the size of the pear (!) and brought back to the lodge. Cut off the greens to make soup (you can do something with every part of the crop, it seems), and rinsed the bodies for slicing and pickling. Evidently the french like to shred and mix with butter and cracked salt and spread over their bread. Of course, what wouldn’t taste excellent on their bread! Anyway, the crop (and you can see the pear-shaped one right on the top):

and luckily for me, I have a 40 quart canning pot that I used to cook up the greens – no skillet I have is big enough. Greens:

and greens cooking in the big-ass pot on the stove:

Hopefully on Sunday that pot will be filled with jars of pickled cucumbers and radishes. I have a couple of books to guide me, and of course, my mad little helper who wants to pickle everything in sight.

While things were resting, I built a small shelf by the outside shower, which now holds all the necessities to get the job done. Perhaps I’ll break it in tonight! Waiting for the sun to calm down to go for a nice hike – on the same path where Leonardo and I discovered the huckleberries. Perhaps they’re just flowering now…
