Company is gone. Time to relax and then not relax. By that I mean a day or time set aside just to recuperate from all the action. By not relax, I mean plenty of chores to do!

During rest time, Lance and I drove to the end of Fish Creek Road (about 18 more miles) and checked out Lolo Hot Springs resort (as funky as you might expect), and then parked the car to walk/hike the Lewis & Clark Trail, which ran along the much older (a couple thousand) Nez Perce Trail. When Lewis & Clark made their journey, they certainly made use of a series of native american trails that had been loosely connected over so many years. It was really cool to think they walked and explored along the same trail we were on. We tried the trail that led north of the road, but it was pretty short, a series of loops and actually – kinda bizarre – in the midst of being transformed into a frisbee golf course. Here’s the proof:

Lewis&ClarkTrail_20150722-1So, we headed back to the road and took the trail towards the south, which was a lovely forest, gently sloping upward until the trees thinned out and we took a rest before heading back. How to know we were on the trail?

The long drive back was quiet.

As you might imagine, it’s time for a visual update on the garden:

corn and chard in the box closest, then carrots and cippolini onions, two varieties of beets in the 3rd box and sugar peas in the one furthest away.

As of now, I have harvested chard, radishes, beets, carrots, sugar peas, round zucchini, oregano, mint, chives and most recently, the first yellow crookneck squash, shell peas and string beans! I can even see 4 tiny ears of corn. I have never grown corn before, so we shall see how it does. The plants are way short, so I am not expecting too much. So many good-looking tomatoes that I can’t wait for those. Late August looks to be a bumper harvest….let the canning begin!
