Yes, indeed, folks, at 62 11/12, I made my first journey to the experience in the Nevada desert known as Burning Man. So many people seem to think that it is a rock n’ roll festival of some kind, and it’s true that some attendees skim the surface to only experience sex, drugs and suchlike.
However, for those of us who seek to explore and understand the energy and wonder of the universe, there is so much depth in this largest-in-the world leave-no-trace community. Whether events or curiosity sweeps you toward healing, dancing, music, singing or, in fact, art, there’s more of all that and more available than any individual could experience in 6 times the time allotted for such exploration.
And, not surprisingly, there is no way to convey the energy, immediacy of connection, nor complete safety and happiness that is experienced in the dust, from a bike or laying around just about anywhere. I have a few photos to share, but first will list the 10 Principles upon which the event is founded and that guides all of us in our adventures there:
- Radical Inclusion
- Gifting
- Decommodification
- Radical Self-Reliance
- Radical Self-Expression
- Communal Effort
- Civic Responsibility
- Leaving No Trace
- Participation
- Immediacy

this beautiful piece of art contains a maze. working on the theory that the mind is a maze. i went to check it out on the penultimate day, and it was closed. Boo hoo!
