Down by the bay

The Bay islands, off the coast of Honduras. We’re on the largest one, called Roatan, to scuba dive on one of the longest reefs in the eastern hemisphere. We’ve arrived at Anthony’s Key Resort, an all-inclusive on the south side of the island. The main buildings (office, restaurant, bar, dive shop) are on the shore of the island, and most of our accommodations are on a little key across the water. I should be ashamed , but I have to say that I have been utterly and completely spoiled by the abundance, diversity and brilliance of the reefs in the Pacific. But I am on my first group dive trip, with three dive shops from Colorado, and that is a fun, new experience. Tonight is the Halloween party and Bert and I have dressed up as Gilligan and MaryAnne – and pretty damn good ones at that!

I took the nitro certification course the week before I left, and tested it all out on my first dive. Basically breathing an air mixture with a higher concentration of oxygen, so not so tired after diving. Reef was large and interesting, but not too much life. People here are really nice, but I don’t get to practice my Spanish…evidently that is spoken on the mainland, but pretty  much only English on the island.

The resort is set amongst the verdant greenery that is typical throughout Mexico and most of Central America, but all of our little cabins are on a little key about 200 yards across a waterway. We hop into a little skiff for a 30 second ride over and back.

Water taxi not around? There’s a scuba tank and metal rod hanging so you can clang it just like a diver’s dinner bell, as it were. Our cabin, number 46, has a back deck with two hammocks, lounge chairs and a killer view to the west of the bay, the waves crashing on the coral and the sunset each night.

No green flash as of yet. There’s always tomorrow!
