Up for a civilized breakfast time. After that, we all donned our layers and life preservers, left our room number fob in the cabinet (a la Winnebago on the waterfront) and awaited our turn to step into a zodiac. Off we zipped for a closer look at Pia Glacier. Walking up slick wet boulders made me a bit nervous, but traction was better than expected.
We stood on one protruding boulder to learn about this particular glacier and how the land formation allows it to keep growing, while the glacier across from it is only continually shrinking.
A hike further up the hill provided a breathtaking panoramic view. A picture of the Australis
in the middle of the lagoon, in which icebergs of varying sizes were floating around, and made to appear diminutive in relation to the mountains around, could have the the photo on a brochure (and probably is). We snapped a lot of photos
and then headed back to the boat.
Lunch and then travelled to Garibaldi fjord and glacier up next. Midway through the fjord, the boat stopped and about a dozen intrepid folks boarded a zodiac to participate in a jungly, steep, muddy hike. Most people did not go, and those of us remaining on board enjoyed the boat pulling up pretty close to the glacier itself. We saws a couple of dolphins, and when Lance and I were in the cabin, he spotted two sea lions on a rock. I have tweaked my back (yes again), so spent most of the day after breakfast resting, doing back exercises and working with my ball to alleviate whatever is going on.
The weather continues to be gray, heavily clouded with off and on sprinkles/rain. A quiet afternoon, the usual briefing on upcoming glaciers and excursions, dinner, and then I went back to rest the pain. Lance was sweet enough (pun intended) to bring my dessert to the room, since I had left dinner early. At 10 pm there was a fashion show (from the gift shop, I suppose) and Bingo. I was sorry to miss the latter, but past my bedtime!
