Headed up to Aspen for the beautiful Labor Day weekend Jazzfest (although the only thing remotely jazzy is the name of the festival). I decided to go up earlier than Bert, so I made an adventure of it: I hopped on the train in Denver early in the morning. Two hours late, but once it got going it was a beautiful ride up through the Rocky Mountains to the station in Glenwood Springs. Took a bus from there into Aspen and admired the aspen trees on the cusp of their annual panoramic display of fall colors.
Bert arrived late Friday night and we met up at the festival grounds. He procured gratis VIP tickets, so I experienced the fest in a completely different area than usual. Free food, booze, close up seating and standing……so this is how the rich and famous live! Really enjoyed walking up on the side of the stage to a little balcony area from which we could look down (now I mean this literally, of course) on the performers. Really cool, and Wilco put on a great show.
Saturday morning we rented a couple of bikes in town and went for a bike ride along the creek. You could ride all the way to Glenwood Springs and back to if one had the time and inclination.
We headed over to Snowmass city park early in the afternoon so I could shake my moo-moo to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. I had seen her a few weeks earlier at and E-Town taping, and man, could she belt out a song and wriggle her body right along with it. She hails from the same vicinity as James Brown, and there’s definitely something in the water down there. The Dap Kings are no slouches either, bringing in the full horn section and pumping out the jive. The set up:
Sunday morning it was breakfast with Adam and Anne before a nice hike in the mountains. Had a great time catching up with them and handing over the historical wicker bassinet, which has had ten difference babies begin their life in, and I definitely need to make the list of names before I forget who they all were!
We headed ou to the Maroon Bells and hiked up to the lake for a picnic and nap before heading back. No music tonight….who does really still want to see Lynyrd Skynyrd? I guess some people still want to be able to yell out “Free Bird!” and have it mean something.
Home again on Monday for the annual Levin Labor Day pool party and the beginning of another Fall season.
